A movie expert weighs in on why the teen dramedy was a box-office flop. By Jocelyn Vena Last Friday, Miley Cyrus' soapy teen dramedy “LOL” opened to a limited release in nine states. The film, by all accounts, didn't perform the way a film starring Cyrus, “Twilight” star Ashley Greene and one-time screen siren Demi Moore, might be expected to. “LOL,” an English-language adaptation of a French Film of the same name, grossed only $46,500 in 105 theaters. While it's hard to tell why the film underperformed, it seems that a lack of marketing leading up to its debut may have played a role in that. The flick follows the story of a teen, Lola (played by Cyrus), as she faces the strife of first love in a world driven by technology. “It's really hard to say because we've heard absolutely nothing about it. I think there was some buzz about this was sort of going to be a different type of breakout role for Miley. I'm not a fan of Miley, but I would actually like to see that and I think a lot of people would,” Brooke Tarnoff, a senior editor at Next Movie, told MTV News about the lackluster interest in the flick once it dropped. With so few eyes on the release leading up to May 4, it's hard to tell if the performance had anything to do with Cyrus. Tarnoff added, “Maybe the selling power of Miley has diminished. I think her fanbase may be less loyal than it was in the 'Hannah Montana' days, but it's all kind of moot.” The film had gotten some attention when Cyrus and Greene were spotted filming it back in 2010 . But, after shooting wrapped, little else was heard about the film until a trailer dropped in mid-April, three weeks before the limited release. “There's obviously an audience for pretty much anything,” she continued. “And this one having a 'Twilight' star and Miley Cyrus, who still has some cache, it's just [a missed opportunity].” Regardless of the film's box-office performance, Cyrus seemed proud of it. She took to Twitter over the weekend and brushed off the low numbers. “Thank u so much for everyone who went to see LOL,” she wrote. “It is a film I loved making and I am proud of…. Britney, Demi, Miley, Avril? We Rate Potential ‘X Factor’ Judges!

With Simon Cowell rumored to be courting a raft of pop princesses for season two, we grade the judges-to-be. By James Montgomery By now, we're all aware that Simon Cowell is reloading. After largely firing blanks on the first season of “The X Factor,” he cleared the chamber — casting off judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger (not to mention host Steve Jones) — and is now in the process of lining up a collection of high-profile, hollow-point replacements with which to take down the competition. Of course, just who Cowell ends up nabbing seems to be a matter of some speculation: His $15 million deal with Britney Spears appeared to be a near certainty, but in the weeks since it was first reported, there's been no movement. And now come rumors that he's courting the likes of Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne to join the “X Factor” team. Are those names just part of a shrewd ploy from Cowell to get Spears to relent on her reported contract demands and insistences on “various perks”? Or is he truly determined to assemble an all-star lineup for the “Factor”? Really, your guess is as good as ours. Needless to say, we're not sure who will be joining the “X Factor” panel when the show returns later this year (though we suspect Fox may shed some light on the matter at an upfront event for ad buyers on May 14). So, in the meantime, we're just going to take a look at all of the potential judges, comparing their strengths and weaknesses in an attempt to help Cowell put together a potential Murderer's Row. Because we want the “X Factor” to succeed … lord knows we don't have enough singing competitions on TV at the moment. Here's our no-holds-barred scouting report for each of the “X Factor” hopefuls: Britney Spears Strengths : Spears would instantly become the most famous judge on any U.S. singing competition (sorry Xtina!), therefore automatically raising the profile of a show in desperate need of a good boost. It's the rare combination of both a “career” and a “contemporary” artist, giving the show an answer to “Idol” 's Steven Tyler/ J. Lo combination and the four-headed monster of Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo and Blake Shelton on “The Voice.” As a bonus, she would also fill the “rambling” slot vacated by Abdul, not to mention the “thousand-mile stare” void left when Scherzinger got the boot. Weaknesses : It's Britney : Live TV may not exactly suit her. Demi Lovato Strengths : At just 19 years old, Lovato would give Cowell an in-road to the younger, Disney-fied demographic he so desperately craves. Can definitely sing (check her terrific tear-jerker “Skyscraper” for proof), which automatically puts her ahead of something like 90 percent of her singing-competition contemporaries. Has the kind of harrowing backstory that would automatically shut down any hard-luck contestants looking for a few pity points. Weaknesses : Older viewers might confuse her with Selena Gomez. Could also forget where she is, accidentally reenact that one episode of “Sonny with a Chance” when she's framed for stealing a necklace and subsequently fires a cheese cannon. Miley Cyrus Strengths : An established star (with a slightly checkered past ), which would give “X Factor” the kind of constant tabloid attention it failed to generate in season one. Has proven on songs like “The Climb” and her recent cover of Bob Dylan's “You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” that she's actually got a great voice, which, like Lovato, puts her in rarefied air. Could also use the show as a way of launching the next phase of her career, which would be mutually beneficial and might just spawn something like the certified “Voice” smash “Moves Like Jagger.” Weaknesses : May currently be better known for her paparazzi coverage than her actual music. Might take another hit of salvia and confuse every male contestant with Liam. Avril Lavigne Strengths : Has been at it for a while now, has more genuine hits than anyone except Spears. She's also got previous judging experience and seems to be genuinely concerned with her artistic integrity. And although her Goodbye Lullaby album didn't match the commercial heights of her previous efforts, you can't fault her for aiming high. Weaknesses : Preternaturally appears to be 14 years old. May always wear a hoodie during shows. Is constantly making the “sucking a lemon” face. Doesn't exactly strike us as a people person. Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus Rumored For ‘X Factor’ Judge Spot

Lovato in talks to join Britney Spears on judging panel. By Gil Kaufman After booting Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell's “X Factor” appears to be going in a youthful direction. Though producers of the show have not yet officially announced that Britney Spears has joined the judging panel   of the show for its upcoming second season, according to reports the fourth seat — next to Cowell and record executive L.A. Reid — could go to Demi Lovato . Citing unnamed sources, The Hollywood Reporter said on Tuesday that Disney star Lovato, 19, is “closing a deal” to join Spears as one of the new judges on the show. In an attempt to lure a younger audience, producers are in final negotiations to sign Lovato, though the trade magazine noted that, “The deal is not yet done and could fall apart.” Spokespeople for Lovato and “Factor” could not be reached for comment at press time, and did not comment to the Reporter for their story, but the magazine speculated that Cowell could be planning to make a judging reveal at the Fox upfront event for ad buyers on May 14. Auditions with the new judges are slated to take place at the end of this month. Though Spears has reportedly been circling   a $15 million deal to appear on the second season of the show, the Los Angeles Times noted that final talks on her contract have dragged on because the 30-year-old singer has, “insisted on various perks that have bogged down negotiations.” A point of conflict has reportedly been Cowell's insistence that Spears sign a two-year contract with the show, while she wants the option of opting out after just one season if she feels the gig is not a good fit. Whether Spears manager/boyfriend Jason Trawick   and Cowell were able to reach an agreement on the issue has not been made public. Lovato's name is also not the only youthful one being bandied about for the final spot. Both Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne have been mentioned as potential judges, though no details or confirmation of those talks have emerged. Several other female stars, including Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey, have also been rumored as potential “Factor” judges, but neither appear to be in the mix at this point. By Kara Warner Miley Cyrus suffered a minor mishap in attempting to channel her inner Rachael Ray on Tuesday (April 17) when she cut her finger while cooking and had to be rushed to the hospital for stitches. Gossip website Starfeine broke the news and obtained the photographic evidence via a snapshot of Cyrus headed to the hospital, holding the injured finger wrapped in gauze. “She cut her finger while cooking,” Cyrus' rep told Us Weekly. “[She] had to get a few stitches. She's doing fine.” Cyrus later tweeted an update about the incident via a back-and-forth Twitter conversation with fan site MileyCyrus.bz and let everyone know she was doing fine, aside from being peeved that paparazzi followed her to the hospital. “@MileyCyrusBz as you can tell by the horrible faces I'm making I obviously didn't know they were there,” Cyrus tweeted in response to the paparazzi shots. “Pretty messed up following me to ER. I'm all stitched up & have on a splint so I'm good,” she added via a follow-up tweet . “As you can tell by my expression, didn't feel so good. Curse u blender!” We're not exactly sure what Cyrus was doing sticking her hands into a blender, but we're happy she's all stitched up and on the mend. Starfeine claimed the 19-year-old singer/actress was accompanied by a substantial support team on her trip to the emergency room. Remake of 2008 French film finds Cyrus seeking revenge on a cheating ex-boyfriend. By Fallon Prinzivalli It's been a long time coming for Miley Cyrus' remake of the 2008 French film “LOL.” Since the announcement back in 2010 that the film is being distributed by Lionsgate , news on the movie has been lacking. Well, not anymore, Cyrus fans. On Tuesday, the official trailer for the film dropped, which gives fans a preview of what the movie has in store. In a generation that spends more time updating the world about their problems than their families, 17-year-old Lola's (Cyrus) status is constantly changing. As an attempt to get back at her — now ex — boyfriend Chad for cheating on her with Ashley ( Ashley Greene ), Lola starts seeing his best friend, Kyle ( Douglas Booth ). Her life begins to spiral downward as her grades drop while she experiments with drugs and sex, and a divorce has her mom completely oblivious to it all. Soon she starts to fall for Kyle and things get even more complicated. The trailer is a great peek at the teen drama, and we have the five key scenes from it. EX -Boyfriend The trailer begins with Lola's voice over: “Every year it's weird going back to school, but here we are just going with the flow, trying to love and laugh out loud.” She abruptly stops laughing when she calls out Chad on not texting her throughout the summer and he admits he hooked up with Lola's rival Ashley. She acts like she doesn't care, but as soon as she enters her room she begins crying on her bed. This emotional scene that sets up the rest of the trailer. A New Beginning Lola quickly gets over her failed romance as she begins hanging out with Chad's best friend Kyle. A montage begins of their new friendship as they share a lollipop, rock out on an air guitar and come this close to kissing by his car. Everything is even more wonderful when he tells her, “You're amazing.” We imagine audiences will quickly become fans of Booth. “I can't believe I ever dated you!” But the puppy love comes to a halt when Lola begins her sexual awakening. It seems rumors begin circulating when Chad says to Lola in the school courtyard, “Now that you're giving it up I figured maybe I could get some.” The next scene shows Lola lashing out and pushing him into a gate screaming, “I can't believe I ever dated you!” The trailer isn't clear on what exactly causes the outburst, but we're betting it's pretty bad judging by Lola's reaction. Trouble In Paradise? As it turns out, Chad's comment is just the beginning of situations that spiral out of Lola's control. The next few scenes show a fight with her mom about her grades dropping and a drunken make-out session with Kyle. Her life gets even worse as she witnesses Kyle walking with his arm around Ashley. When she confronts him about it, he denies it and she spits out, “You're disgusting.” But we already knew Greene's character would cause a stir when Demi Moore told MTV News “she's really saucy.” “Status can change, but true love remains the same.” Throughout the next montage of scenes, we see “status can change, but true love remains the same” typed out across the screen as Kyle dedicates a song to Lola and she makes up with her mom. Finally, as a smiling Kyle rests his head on an equally happy Lola, the trailer leaves us with the feeling that despite the craziness of high school, everything will work out for Lola in the end. Sources say the sparkler she’s wearing isn’t engagement bling. By Jocelyn Vena Liam Hemsworth currently has the #1 movie in the country with “The Hunger Games,” but could he also be celebrating an engagement to his longtime lady love, Miley Cyrus ? The rumor mill is in full effect after Miley was spotted wearing what looked like a sparkling diamond ring on her ring finger at several events (including one over the weekend) as well as in a photo she tweeted out showing a manicure she recently got. While the actress and her beau haven't commented on an engagement or whether the ring actually symbolizes anything, sources tell Usmagazine.com and People.com that the couple is not engaged. The couple met in 2009 on the set of “The Last Song,” when they took their onscreen love affair offscreen. They broke up for a short time in August 2010 and reportedly got back together in April 2011 and have been going strong ever since. The pair haven't appeared on the big screen together since “The Last Song,” and Hemsworth recently kept the possibility of a Miley cameo in “Catching Fire” open-ended, simply telling MTV News, “Who knows?” Cyrus was also on hand at the “Hunger Games” premiere, and she seemed to have a different answer: “I don't think so. I don't think so!” Whatever the status of their relationship, Hemsworth made it clear in a recent Details magazine interview that things are great between them. “What happened happened, and we've been together two and a half years,” the Aussie star said. “She makes me really happy. ‘I have to try and keep my cool,’ the singer/songwriter told MTV News about her excitement over boyfriend Liam Hemsworth’s new movie. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Katniss Everdeen might be the girl who set Gale Hawthorne's heart ablaze, but the man who plays the heroine's fellow District 12 denizen — Australian actor Liam Hemsworth — has a love life sparked by a different flame. We're talking about none other than Hemsworth's longtime girlfriend Miley Cyrus , of course, who hit the ” Hunger Games ” world premiere in Los Angeles on Monday (March 12) in full force to support her boyfriend's work on the film. Though Miley herself isn't a well-studied “Hunger Games” fan, she has some good reasons to have stayed away from the source material until the big premiere. “I've only read through them with Liam when he was working on [the movie],” Cyrus told MTV News about her familiarity with the “Hunger Games” books. “I tried to keep it pretty separate and not turn myself into too much of a fan. But it's going to be hard probably; after watching this film, I'm going to be dying to see the next two. But I have to try and keep my cool!” But even without having read the “Hunger Games,” Cyrus can't entirely escape the fanfare surrounding the Gary Ross-directed movie. Even she has a specific scene she can't wait to see — and surprisingly, it has absolutely nothing to do with Liam. “There's this scene with [lead actress Jennifer Lawrence] when she comes out in this amazing dress when they present her; that's the one thing I know,” said Cyrus, referring to Katniss' famous “girl on fire” appearance. “I know [the whole movie] is not about that, but I can't wait to see that part! I'm dying over it already. I know that's the silliest girl thing and nobody is probably looking forward to that dress except me.” Cyrus is definitely not the only person looking forward to the girl on fire, but despite her budding fandom, don't expect the “Hannah Montana” star to catch fire herself anytime soon.
