‘This is definitely ranked the highest,’ she tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus Photo: MTV News While falling in love on the set of might be one of the reasons Miley Cyrus enjoyed filming “The Last Song,” out Friday, she admits that getting out of Los Angeles and heading to Tybee Island, Georgia, didn’t hurt either. In fact, she said making this flick, written especially for her by Nicholas Sparks , ranks as the best career experience she’s had thus far. “I had a blast! Not only the cast, but the crew too — that’s one of the most important things: to enjoy the people you are working with,” she told MTV News. “This is definitely ranked the highest. I loved it and was so lucky to work with the people I did. If I could go back, I would love to.” While she loved filming the movie as a whole, what were her favorite scenes to shoot? “Anything on the beach. That was awesome,” she said. “That was the best day to go to work, anything on the beach or the pier scene.” Cyrus said it was especially fun to play Ronnie because of how much she had in common with the character . “It was mostly the music,” she said. “I love animals, so they added sea turtles. I was happy to be there. Just a lot of different things that you could see me in rather than a Hannah Montana. You know, [I put] a little more Miley into Ronnie.” Miley also loved swimming with sharks for the flick. “At first, I was like, ‘Oh gosh!’ ” she recalled. “I was really dreading that day. But I’d do it again. It was really fun.” Are you excited to see “The Last Song”? Tell us in the comments! Miley Cyrus in “The Last Song” Photo: Touchstone Pictures Miley Cyrus has dealt with her share of criticism over the last few years. From her wardrobe choices to performing while swinging on a stripper pole , Cyrus has been known to create controversy and has dealt with disapproval from the parents of her young fans. So, it seems that with the more mature themes of her new flick, “The Last Song,” she could relate to her character, rebellious teen Ronnie. “I was … a little more anxious and excited. I was just excited to get out of L.A. and go to Georgia and have some time off,” she said about shooting the film, opening on Wednesday (March 31). The role was written especially for Cyrus by “The Notebook” scribe Nicholas Sparks . Like Cyrus, Ronnie is also a musician, a trait the singer could relate to. However, Cyrus had to learn piano for the role. “Mostly through the love of music. Mostly what she learns later is all about love and forgiveness and second chances — you know, in the career I’m in I have to do that a lot,” she explained about their similarities. “There’s no room for grudges and bitterness. She learns that later it’s all about love and the people around you. And I think it’s really beautifully done the way she has that transition and learns.” The film’s director, Julie Anne Robinson, has praised Cyrus’ performance and Cyrus says that playing Ronnie was a lot easier with Robinson’s direction. “She did an amazing job. She kept me always different, not always tears; she always gave me something different to do. She gave it a lot more dimension.” What do you think of Miley’s turn as Ronnie in “The Last Song”? ‘The first day, we both knew it was going to be a great summer,’ she says of filming with now-boyfriend. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Miley Cyrus says she has no reservations about her fans, family or friends checking out her kissing scenes with real-life boyfriend Liam Hemsworth in “The Last Song.” In fact, she’s more nervous about what people will think about her performance in the movie than their opinions about the couple’s onscreen chemistry. “That doesn’t make me nervous more than ‘I don’t like what I did there in that scene’ [or] ‘I don’t like what I was wearing’ [or] ‘I don’t like the way my body looks’ or something,” Cyrus told MTV News about the flick, which opens Wednesday (March 31). “That makes me more nervous — when people are staring at me. All of my friends know Liam and love Liam.” Cyrus has her mom, Tish, to thank for that last bit. The elder Cyrus, as an executive producer on the film, was active in casting an actor to play Miley’s onscreen love interest, Will. “She narrowed it down to four or five people. The first time I read, I was running late to work anyway — I had to go to ‘Hannah Montana.’ I wasn’t really thinking about it. I didn’t really remember anyone,” she recalled. “Then I went back for the second reading, when it was down to him and another guy,” she recalled. “He was just so respectful and had such a good energy, and that’s mainly why he did the role so well. He very much is like Will.” As far as their chemistry goes, Cyrus said that as soon as the cameras began rolling, she knew they had that “it” factor. “I think the first day, we both knew it was going to be a great summer,” she said. “I think when you just vibe with someone, you know your energies connect, and it just happens — usually right in the beginning.” Are you excited to see “The Last Song”? Miley Cyrus Says Nicholas Sparks’ Writing Is Grounded In ‘Reality’

‘Last Song’ writer conveys romance ‘without going melodramatic and corny,’ Cyrus tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus Photo: MTV News Miley Cyrus will hit the big screen this week — not as alter ego Hannah Montana, but instead in a film written especially for her by best-selling novelist Nicholas Sparks. Earlier this year, the writer made girls swoon at the box office with his flick “Dear John.” Playing rebellious teen Ronnie Miller, Cyrus is certainly proving to everyone she’s not just a Disney princess. The flick, which is about Ronnie’s relationship not only with her estranged dad (Greg Kinnear) but also with new flame Will (Liam Hemsworth), really touched Cyrus. “I think he does romance in such a cool way,” Cyrus told MTV News about Sparks. “He does it like ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ a pure love story without going melodramatic and corny. It’s just romantic, and it’s almost like a fairy tale, but it has reality to it.” Not only did Sparks construct a story and character for Cyrus to evolve as an actress, but director Julie Anne Robinson also pushed Cyrus to add more “dimension” to her acting. “She did an amazing job,” Cyrus said. “She kept me always different, not always tears. She always gave me something different to do, gave it a lot more dimension.” Robinson wasn’t too familiar with Cyrus’ work before she worked with her on this film, but she knew Miley could handle the part. “I met her and had a good feeling about working with her,” Robinson said. “Nick Sparks wrote the role for her. I’m an actor’s director. I love to pull performances and work with young actors. I felt confident.” Are you excited to see Miley in “The Last Song”? Let us know in the comments! Miley Cyrus, Taylor Lautner Win Big At Kids’ Choice Awards

Katy Perry’s sliming and performances from Justin Bieber and Rihanna were among show’s standout moments. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus at the Kids’ Choice Awards on Saturday Photo: Chris Polk/KCA2010/Getty Images The Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards hit Los Angeles on Saturday (March 27) with plenty of performances, surprises and, of course, slime. Kevin James opened the show in a sketch with Nick stars Big Time Rush, who gave the host some pointers on how to make the show cool. Their biggest hint: Make sure someone gets slimed. When James hit the stage, “angel” Adam Sandler descended from the ceiling to remind his “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” co-star that he could do it. James then took off the tux and started dancing while Sandler sang a little ditty to the tune of KC and the Sunshine Band’s “Get Down Tonight,” with slime released from the floor. Rosario Dawson and Shaun White gave out the first award for Favorite Movie Actor to “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” star Taylor Lautner. “Is this happening? I have to admit, I have always dreamt of winning one of these orange blimps,” Lautner told the crowd. “Seriously. And I can’t believe I’m finally holding one.” James made sure the show was “beyond awesome.” How? By firing free stuff out of a canon. Ladies and gentlemen, this isn’t the Grammys. He told the crowd there were more than 115 million votes, adding that it was a new world record for awards-show fan votes. “Karate Kid” stars Jayden Smith and Jackie Chan showed off some martial-arts moves then handed out the Favorite TV Show award to “iCarly.” Miranda Cosgrove eagerly accepted the award, saying, “Wow, this is amazing. Most of all, I want to say thank you to the fans.” George Lopez and Tyra Banks hit the stage to present Favorite TV Actress. Banks praised the ladies for “chasing their dreams,” and the blimp went to “Wizards of Waverly Place” star Selena Gomez. “I’m so nervous,” she told the crowd. “I know it’s because of you guys I get to live my dream out every day. I’m the luckiest girl in the whole world.” Kids’ Choice Awards Red Carpet Big Time Rush introduced Rihanna, who took the stage and sang her hit “Hard” in a sparkly black hat and a gray and hot-pink dress. The stage was complete with a band, a tank and military-inspired backup dancers. The medley also included “Rude Boy, with the risqu? lyrics toned down, and “Don’t Stop the Music.” The awards show included quite a few slimings. “The Last Airbender” and “Twilight” star Jackson Rathbone was one of the many celebrities who ended up green by the end of the night. Jonah Hill and Katy Perry, in a neon-blue wig and yellow dress, presented the award for Favorite Movie Actress. But first, Hill pulled a fast one on Perry, tricking her into opening a box that covered her in slime . That award went to Miley Cyrus, who ran away from a slime-covered Perry. “Thank you, Katy, for not sliming me,” she said. “It really got you, but good thing we both wear wigs. … Thank you guys so much!” After Perry got slimed, the stage needed to be cleaned up before Victoria Justice and Dev Patel introduced Justin Bieber. The teen sensation sang his hit “Baby” with backup dancers and a full band. His performance included some smooth moves and a lot of fan interaction with the girls near the stage. He also displayed his rap skills, tackling Ludacris’ part in the song. It wasn’t just his young fans singing along with the tune; a shot of the crowd also showed Tyra Banks singing along. Keke Palmer and Miranda Cosgrove presented the Big Help Award to first lady Michelle Obama for her efforts to prevent childhood obesity. “Nickelodeon has big fans in the White House,” she said, accepting her award via video. “I’m always so impressed by the passion and energy you put into everything you do. You guys have to make smart and healthy choices in your own lives. It’s not always easy, but I know you can do it.” “Where was that speech when I was 6?” James joked. Zoe Saldana and Robert Downey Jr. presented the award for Favorite Movie. “I thought you’d be bluer,” he joked to the actress. Surprisingly, “New Moon” was beat out by “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.” Stars Jesse McCartney, Anna Faris and Zachary Levi accepted the blimp. “You probably don’t recognize me. I’m usually a lot shorter and hairier,” McCartney joked. Levi added: “And to ‘Twilight,’ sorry!” “Date Night” stars Steve Carell and Tina Fey thought they were going to get an award. “Maybe it’s a lifetime-achievement award,” Carell joked before they won a slime-time achievement award and got covered in the green goo. “This is better than winning any award!” they agreed. The show ended with James taking the show “beyond awesome” by getting slimed with “Angel” Adam Sandler making his return and with Apolo Anton Ohno setting a new slime world record by catapulting himself into a small pool of slime. Other wins included Favorite Reality Show for “American Idol,” Favorite Male Singer for Jay-Z, and Taylor Swift taking home Favorite Female Singer and Favorite Song (“You Belong With Me”). Cyrus tells Jay Leno about meeting ‘Last Song’ co-star and real-life boyfriend at Starbucks. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” Photo: NBC Miley Cyrus had no doubt that she and Liam Hemsworth, her “Last Song” co-star and real-life boyfriend , would have chemistry after she met him for the first time. As soon as he arrived at Starbucks for their first “co-star” date, she knew that he was the right guy for her and for the part. “He’s cute. He plays my boyfriend in the movie, which is very convenient,” she joked when she stopped by “The Tonight Show” to chat with Jay Leno on Thursday. “I met him two weeks before filming. We went on a Starbucks date. That’s what you do when you meet your co-star that you have to be kissing for months and months and months, and I was sold.” That encounter made kissing him on the very first day of filming very easy. “[Our first kiss] was on the first day of filming in the movie,” she said. “We have this scene where we frolic in the water. So I frolic very well apparently, and after that I got to keep him.” Cyrus and Hemsworth have only been dating for about 10 months, but she says that they’ve already checked out each other’s parents to see how well they will age in the future. “He looked good and he’s got a full head of hair,” she said about her beau’s dad. And as for her mom, Tish, Cyrus joked, “My mom’s hot, so … No, I’m very aware [she's hot]. I think that was the only reason why I had any guy friends.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Last Song.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . At the premiere of ‘The Last Song,’ Miley dishes about ‘American Idol’ and Bieber fever. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Ryan J. Downey Miley Cyrus at the “Last Song” premiere Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images This week, not only did Miley Cyrus get to serve as a mentor on “American Idol,” but she also got to hang out with pop music’s newest idol, Justin Bieber, when both appeared on “The View.” But she admitted that her 10-year-old sister, Noah, was a lot more excited to meet the 16-year-old than she was. “Bieber fever … I’m not necessarily a fan. I don’t listen to that kind of music,” she told MTV News at the red carpet for her new flick, “The Last Song,” on Thursday night in Los Angeles. “I like Kurt Cobain. [He] is like my dream boyfriend.” Noah, however, was thrilled to get a very public shout-out from the “Baby” singer. “But my little sister was obsessed with him, and he actually gave her a shout-out on Twitter,” she said. “And I thought that was really sweet. So I was like, ‘Thank you so much. That meant a lot too.’ … He called her a cutie, and I haven’t stopped hearing about it.” Meanwhile, Miley was still thrilled about being chosen to mentor the Idols this week. “It’s cool. I was the youngest mentor, so I was excited that people really cared what I had to say and were inspired by me,” she said. “And it was great.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Last Song.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Miley Cyrus Discusses Her Chemistry With Liam Hemsworth On ‘Ellen’

‘We’ve been together for 10 months now and I’m really happy,’ singer says about her beau and ‘Last Song’ co-star. By Jocelyn Vena Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus Photo: Stefanie Keenan/Getty Images for Chopard Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth didn’t share their onscreen/offscreen chemistry from the get-go. Cyrus says that when they first started shooting their movie “The Last Song” last summer, she wasn’t sure how Hemsworth felt about her. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres set to air on “Ellen” next Wednesday, Cyrus, who also appeared on “American Idol” this week, explains that when she first met Hemsworth, she had no intention of dating him, or anyone else for that matter. “I was actually going through a tough time. I was like, guys just need to be out of my life for a little while,” she explained. “[I thought] ‘I just need to alone.’ “I kind of just wanted to focus on my work. I tend to hide behind my work sometimes,” she says of how she felt at the time. But there was something about Hemsworth that made her change her mind. “But I met him, and he opened the door for me, and I was like, I have been in L.A. for three years and I don’t think any guy has actually opened the door for me. It wasn’t that he wanted the job. That’s just who he is. I was like, ‘Wow, that is super-impressive.’ I actually turned to the director and said, ‘He’s got the job.’ He’s hot and he opened the door. Excellent.” The attraction was there for Cyrus, but she wasn’t sure they could make it work. “We started filming and at one point the chemistry was kind of awkward. … I liked him a little bit, he liked me a little bit, but it was awkward,” she said. “Then I was like, ‘OK, just fake it.’ [I said] ‘Please just pretend you like me’ and he was like ‘I don’t have to pretend. I really do like you.’ [Then it was like] ‘OK, you’re going to be my boyfriend. Cool.’ ” So, how good are things for the pair now? Apparently pretty great. “We’ve been together for 10 months now and I’m really happy,” she said. “I like him more now than I did [before] because we know more about each other.” “The Last Song” is due in theaters Wednesday, March 31. ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Our Parents’ Hits Can’t Save Paige Miles

Miley Cyrus and the top 11′s take on Billboard hits make Jim bitter. By Jim Cantiello Paige Miles performs on “American Idol” on Wednesday Photo: FOX “American Idol” in 60 Seconds has fast become an MTV News institution, but it goes by so fast that it’s not always easy to catch every golden nugget. So, here we present to you Jim Cantiello’s bite-size recap of this week’s “Idol” high jinks. This week’s “American Idol” was a lot like watching an episode of “Cops,” in that you needed to separate from the reality of the situation in order to fully enjoy its absurd pop-culture trashiness. (Unlike “Cops,” nobody was half naked and handcuffed; although it’s likely Kara has imagined such a scenario with Casey James.) First of all, we had mentor Miley Cyrus , who decided to give advice to the contestants pantless. (But don’t worry, she wore two crucifixes to balance out her bare bottom half.) All kidding aside, Miley turned out to be a perfectly respectable “Idol” guest. She warmly disapproved of contestants who fumbled lyrics (Andrew Garcia), urged front-runners to push themselves harder (Crystal Bowersox) and came up with a silly excuse to hug the cute boy (Tim Urban). And then there were the performances. … Oh, the performances. The week’s wide-open theme was Billboard #1 hits (shhhh, don’t tell anyone that Miley has never had a #1 song on the Hot 100 Chart). But almost all of the contestants picked songs that were popular when their parents were twentysomethings. Aerosmith, Phil Collins, Linda Ronstadt, Percy Sledge, Marvin Gaye … wait, is this “The Big Chill” soundtrack? Ironically, 17-going-on-70-year-old Katie Stevens was the one contestant who picked a contemporary song (Fergie’s ode to blankets). The only performance worthy of any real praise was season-nine MVP Crystal Bowersox’s “Me and Bobby McGee.” Let’s just hope she starts bringing new things to the stage each week, other than plush carpets. Other moments of note: Siobhan had silly hair, Didi made funny faces, Michael Lynche is still a cheeseball, Lee Dewyze can do a Box Tops song without anyone acknowledging the recent passing of Alex Chilton , Casey James does a killer Huey Lewis impression and Tim Urban slid across the stage like he was stealing third base. On Wednesday night’s results show, the contestants slowly learned who made it into the top 10, and thus, the formally beloved, now dreaded American Idols Live summer tour. But first, there were two special musical guest performances to “enjoy!” Miley Cyrus tore into her current hit, “Not the Climb,” like a wolf rips into the carcass of a caribou. (One could argue it was about as pleasant to the listener, too!) Then Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato sang a song about pebbles with such a palpable intensity, I expected the Disney Sonny and Cher to rip off their purity rings and go at it live on television. During the results reveal, we learned that Siobhan’s friends are even weirder than she is (Stage blood! Shaving protests!), Didi Benami has difficulty standing upright while lip-synching (she totally fell during the group number), and Crystal Bowersox is such a beloved TV star, she’s able to mouth the words “holy sh–” on prime-time television without the FCC threatening any fines. In the bottom three: Tim Urban and Paige Miles, not so shocking since Paige croaked one of the worst “Idol” vocals ever Tuesday night. More surprising was Katie Stevens’ inclusion on the chopping block, mostly because it meant Andrew Garcia was not in the bottom three, and as Simon would say, that guy “sucks … the life out of a song.” In the end, Paige was the one who had to sing for her life, but Simon murdered that idea when he told her she had a better chance of conceiving Clay Aiken’s second baby than performing well enough to justify using the judges’ save on her. Check out the latest (especially bitter) “American Idol” in 60 Seconds recap, embedded in this article. Let us know your take on this week’s “Idol” episodes by leaving a comment below.
