Revisit our celebrity-packed New Year’s Eve celebrations from the past decade. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus hosts MTV’s New Years Special on December 31, 2008 Photo: Charley Gallay/ Getty Images MTV has always known how to throw a bangin’ party to ring in the new year. Everyone from “Heroes” star Hayden Panettiere to Miley Cyrus to musical guests like Sum 41 and the Foo Fighters has been on hand to count down to the new year with us, along with hosts like Sway, SuChin Pak, Damien Fahey and Kurt Loder. MTV News has delved into the archives to remember some of the best moments at MTV New Year’s Eve specials of the past decade. In 2001, Lance Bass was on hand to help ring in the new year. And in 2002, the star-filled show featured everyone from Jaime Pressley co-hosting with Carson Daly to Willa Ford hanging with O-Town and Dave Holmes. Brian McFayden chilled with Mandy Moore and Ja Rule that year. “Man, it’s been like the best New Year’s ever,” Ja Rule said. In 2003, MTV threw a pajama party, with the Foo Fighters, the late Brittany Murphy and Ashton Kutcher joining in the celebration. Justin Timberlake sent in a video message explaining why he couldn’t be there: He prefers to sleep in the nude and therefore didn’t own any PJs to wear for the event. Hilary Duff and “Total Request Live” host Damien Fahey hosted MTV’s New Year’s celebration together in 2004. And the cast of “One Tree Hill,” including former MTV VJ Hilarie Burton, helped toast the new year. The show’s then real-life couple Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray shared a kiss when the new year struck at midnight. In 2007 there was also a lot of kissing going on. At the gold-themed party hosted by “Heroes” star Hayden Panettiere and “Laguna Beach” star Stephen Colletti (who eventually dated), Colletti was seen giving Panettiere a quick peck on the cheek. “Gold is one of my favorite colors, so I was very happy,” Panettiere said about hanging with MTV that year. Meanwhile, Nick Lachey and his VJ love, Vanessa Minnillo, swapped a major kiss at midnight. Perez Hilton hung with the cast of “A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila” in 2008. Unfortunately Tila wasn’t on hand for the festivities. In 2009 Miley Cyrus surprised a teen named Alison for the “FNMTV Presents: A Miley-Sized Surprise.” The pink-themed bash had all of Alison’s friends on hand to see Miley perform just for them. Alison won the chance to hang with Miley thanks to her work with the Pink Ribbon Club, an organization that raises awareness about breast cancer. Join the stars of “Jersey Shore” and Adrienne Bailon for MTV News’ “Top 9 of ’09″ — which counts down the year’s biggest stories, from Michael Jackson to Eminem and everything in between — airing New Year’s Eve at 11 p.m. on MTV. Kanye West Vs. Taylor Swift And More Great Feuds Of 2009

Adam Lambert vs. ABC, Eminem vs. Mariah Carey and more showdowns made for a combative year. By Jocelyn Vena Kanye West and Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV VMAs Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images Long before Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift at the VMAs, celebrities were getting on one another’s cases in 2009. Whether it was Speidi vs. Al Roker or huge stars writing songs about one another, this was the year when people weren’t scared to battle it out. Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West Joe Jonas might have finally gotten back at Taylor for writing that song about him (then she got back at him again !), but the VMAs came along and blew that feud out of the water. West bum-rushed the stage during Swift’s acceptance speech, and the resulting backlash led Kanye to cancel his tour with Lady Gaga and basically go into hiding. Swift did accept West’s apology , but not before everyone from the president to Jay-Z weighed in on the matter. Clash Of The Celebrities Eminem vs. Mariah Carey Eminem and Br?no got into quite a little scuffle at the MTV Movie Awards, but it was his song battle with Mariah Carey that had everyone talking. Em released “Bagpipes From Baghdad,” which was about Mariah, then Mariah released her ode to Eminem, “Obsessed.” Appearing in the video as an Eminem look-alike , the singer sparked rumors that she was singing about their alleged fling many moons ago. And Em didn’t leave well enough alone. Although she denied the song was about him, he released a biting response song about the pop star, “The Warning.” To this day, no one really knows what really went down between the pair, but we know it was juicy. Plus, Nick Cannon was none too pleased . Miley Cyrus vs. Twitter Miley might have found herself embroiled in a battle with Radiohead and Jamie Foxx , but her real enemy this year was Twitter. When the singer canceled her account in the fall, the site went crazy and fans didn’t know how they were going to get their hourly Miley fixes. She said that rumored beau Liam Hemsworth had nothing to do with her decision to leave and that her life is so much better without Twitter . Adam Lambert vs. ABC After Adam Lambert hit the American Music Awards stage for an over-the-top performance of “For Your Entertainment,” ABC was anything but entertained. The “American Idol” runner-up didn’t feel the need to apologize for his risqu? performance, and ABC canceled several of his planned appearances on the channel. When he did eventually make it back on the network, he wasn’t allowed to go live: His “View” appearance was pre-taped. Speidi vs. Al Roker With Lauren Conrad no longer on their radar, Speidi found a new person to terrorize. They sat down with Al Roker on “Today,” where they were initially set to chat about their time spent on “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!” The interview quickly and surprisingly turned antagonistic, escalating into a battle of words between Roker and Speidi . The three then slung words at one another on various talk shows and Twitter. Spencer even gave Al a little nickname: The Weatherman. Have they buried the hatchet? Well, Spencer and Heidi were supposed to appear on “Today” in the fall , but that mysteriously never happened. Bret Michaels Says Miley Cyrus ‘Nailed’ Cover Of ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’

‘She’s got a very contemporary twist to it,’ Poison frontman says of ‘Hannah Montana’ star. By Jocelyn Vena Bret Michaels Photo: George Napolitano/FilmMagic Miley Cyrus was excited to work with Bret Michaels on a “rad” cover of Poison’s classic ballad “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” and the feeling was mutual. Michaels insisted that Cyrus is the real deal and he was honored that the star was interested in working with him on the song. “It was really, really simple,” he told MTV News recently while promoting his cameo in “American Pie Presents: The Book of Love.” “I think her first concert was Poison. She saw us at Nashville at the arena. It was her introduction into rock and roll.” He went on to say that despite her role on “Hannah Montana” and her reputation for making catchy pop, Cyrus truly does have a rock-and-roll spirit. “She’s one of the few musicians — and I want to use that word cause she can actually play and sing — she’s one of the few people who can pull it off and give it her own flare and make it sound good,” Michaels offered. Although there’s still some work to be done on the track before it hits stores, the Poison frontman noted that Cyrus “nailed the song. She really knew what she was doing.” He added, “She got in there and picked the guitar up. It was one of those nights that just worked. It was fun. It’s gotta be her taking ‘Every Rose’ and making it all hers.” He made sure to note that the track won’t be a duet. “Well, I’ll do some harmonies and stuff like that, but it’s gotta be her version,” he explained. “I think that’s what’s going to make the song feel like she owns it. She’s got a very contemporary twist to it … it has to be what she feels and [producer] John Shanks feels what’s playing on contemporary radio.” Related Photos MTV News’ 2009 Women Of The Year: #5 Miley Cyrus Related Artists Miley Cyrus Bret Michaels

Bret Michaels Says Miley Cyrus ‘Nailed’ Cover Of ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’
Miley Cyrus Calls ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’ Cover A ‘Rad Collaboration’

‘Bret Michaels and Poison was my very first concert,’ 17-year-old pop star writes. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus (file) Photo: YouTube Miley Cyrus says she doesn’t want to make pop music anymore, and she took a big step toward expanding her musical horizons earlier this month, when she collaborated with Bret Michaels for a cover of Poison ‘s classic hit, “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” The “Hannah Montana” star recently blogged about the experience, revealing why she chose to sing the ’80s ballad . ” ‘Every Rose’ is a classic and one of my favorites,” Cyrus wrote in her blog . “Bret Michaels and Poison was my very first concert and introduced me to rock and roll.” Cyrus explained that she decided to cover the track after hearing a bunch of people around her singing along to it. The 17-year-old also wanted to give a whole new generation of music lovers the chance to hear the song. “It’s a song that everyone knows and loves,” she said. “I feel like the way the music industry is today really shelters kids and they aren’t exposed to songs as honest and real as this one.” The pop star said that Michaels gave her the chance to put her stamp on the song. “Bret and I had a great time in the studio together, just hanging out and making music,” she wrote. “It was so surreal to have him sit down with his acoustic guitar and walk me through ‘Every Rose’ and then give me the opportunity to add my own flare [sic] and edge to it. Bret is so passionate about music, and it shows.” Cyrus went on to describe it as a “rad collaboration.” “It shows that two artists that seem so different on the outside can come together and organically create something that we are both proud of,” she said. “I look forward to finishing the song in L.A. with Bret and John Shanks, who is producing.” Related Photos MTV News’ 2009 Women Of The Year: #5 Miley Cyrus Related Artists Miley Cyrus Bret Michaels Poison

Miley Cyrus Makes ‘The Climb’ To #5 Woman Of The Year

The 17-year-old pop star has been on a roll, with a #1 movie, hit songs and a manageable share of controversy in 2009. By James Montgomery Miley Cyrus Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Which stars had the biggest year? All this week, we’ll be unveiling our top nine men and women of 2009, counting down to the #1 man and woman on Friday. 5. Miley Cyrus In 2008, Miley Cyrus was criticized for growing up too fast. From leaked pics to a risqu? Vanity Fair spread , it seemed like the teen was in a hurry to make the transition from squeaky-clean Disney star to full-grown woman, and the pundits gave her hell for it (though we placed her fourth on our ’08 Woman of the Year countdown ). In 2009, she weathered much of the same criticisms, but she still managed to make giant strides towards adulthood, thanks mostly to a mega-successful tour, a pair of chart-dominating singles and her much-discussed decision to delete her Twitter account. Cyrus might still just be 17 years old, but she’s established herself as a force to be reckoned with and shows no signs of letting up anytime soon. 2009 Highlights: What wasn’t a highlight for Miley in 2009? She came into the year with a Golden Globe-nominated song and an invite to play one of Barack Obama’s inaugural shows . Her “Hannah Montana” movie bowed at #1 at the box office, pulling in some $34 million, the second-highest grossing Easter-weekend debut in history. Within a few weeks, the soundtrack to the movie would claim the top spot on the Billboard albums chart too. TOP 9 WOMEN OF THE YEAR 9. The Kardashians 8. Susan Boyle 7. Kristen Stewart 6. Britney Spears 5. Miley Cyrus 4. Beyonce 3. stay tuned … She released a string of mega-successful singles, “The Climb” and “Party in the U.S.A.,” which not only dominated the charts but earned her critical praise too. She toured and worked on “The Last Song” — a reportedly “more mature” film that paired her with Liam Hemsworth, with whom she’d soon be romantically linked — and filmed a cameo in “Sex and the City 2.” But, oh, there were still controversies. In February, she rankled Asian-rights groups when a photo of her and her friends making a so-called “slant-eyed” gesture hit the Net. Cyrus said the picture was “taken out of context,” but eventually apologized for it. Then, in August, she offended parents’ groups with a pole-dance during her performance at the Teen Choice Awards. In October, Cyrus deleted her famous Twitter account and as fans flooded the site with messages begging her to return, it crashed momentarily. Some said she quit at Hemsworth’s insistence , though she denied it, calling the implication “stupid” and saying Twitter should be “banned from the universe.” Then, in November, she made headlines again when she admitted that contrary to the lyrics of “Party in the U.S.A.,” she’s never heard a Jay-Z song. But Miley never let any of the controversy derail her, and as 2009 draws to a close, she’s winning raves for her cover of Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” Like we said, she shows no signs of slowing down, and we wouldn’t be willing to bet against her in 2010, either. MTV News’ 2009 Women Of The Year: #5 Miley Cyrus Among Cyrus’ other newsworthy moments this year, she feuded with Radiohead and Jamie Foxx . She reunited (in song) with ex-boyfriend Nick Jonas , and tweeted through her breakup with model Justin Gaston . She inadvertently complicated Lil Jon’s life when the rapper somehow acquired her old phone number. She made the brave move of dissing the “Twilight” series . And then she met the Queen of England . Which stars had the biggest 2009? Over the next week, we’ll be unveiling our top nine most newsworthy, controversial and fascinating men and women of the year. We based our list on factors like music sales, box-office performance, MTVNews.com headlines and traffic, overall reach (crossover singles, appearances in movies, licensing of songs for commercials, clothing lines, etc.), plus X-factors like “impact” and “buzz.” (And no, President Barack Obama didn’t make the list — we’ll leave that to the folks at Time. ) This is by no means an exact science, but we think the list we’ve put together represents the men and women who helped make 2009 the most exciting and memorable 12 months in recent history. We’ll be rolling out our list of the Top 9 Men and Women of 2009 two per day until Friday, when we unveil MTV News’ Man and Woman of the year! As always, we also want to know what you think, so weigh in with comments below, or upload them to Your.MTV.com !
