Miley Cyrus And The Perfect Party (In The U.S.A.)

If you have to talk about how hard you’re partying, you’re probably not doing it right, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Miley Cyrus in “Party In The U.S.A.” Photo: Disney Here’s the thing about “Party in the U.S.A.,” Miley Cyrus’ plasticized ode to, well, partying in the USA: It is exceedingly patriotic, but it is not a great party song. This has less to do with the tune itself — which is actually pretty good, thanks to Dr. Luke’s whooshing production, Cyrus’ salty-yet-sweet robo-vocals and the hyper-literal lyrics (Miley listens to Jay-Z and Britney, goes to a club and likes to wear a cardigan when she’s flying cross-country) — than it does with its sentiment. That’s because great party songs are never actually about partying. Shoot, the best ones never even mention it. They don’t have to. This is because talking about partying is completely antithetical to actually partying. Think of every great party you’ve ever been to — the ones where you wake up with a fat lip and someone’s undergarments on your head. Did you ever have to convince anyone who was there that it was, in fact, a great party? Did you ever have to utter the phrase “That was fun! ” Of course not. Because, if you did, it wouldn’t have been a great party and you wouldn’t have ended up with underwear in your hair. The great ones leave no doubt in your mind — they don’t require convincing and they don’t need validation. And the same logic also applies to great party songs — they must be organic, they must be chaotic, and they must come stumbling out of the cold, slurring and sidewinding and slurping (this is basically Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Got Your Money”). They’re not eager to get a party started, because they know the best parties don’t just start, they happen. They’re not going to try to make you dance because, well, you should just want to dance. (Otherwise, why are you even at the party?) They are full of unspoken truths, sexy subtleties. They don’t want to party with you — you want to party with them. In other words, great party songs don’t give a f— about the actual party. And as soon as you pepper the chorus of your tune with the P-word — like Miley has done — you’ve violated this cardinal rule. You’ve forced the issue, you’ve stated the obvious and you’ve made the musical equivalent of a party at your parents’ house, with mom and dad manning the keg. It’s sad and it’s just too eager. And using the word “Party” in the title of your song is possibly the worst violation of all, because it makes the tune — as my editor April Richardson put it — “like the guy trying to start the wave.” And who wants to party with him? (Of course, there are some exceptions: super-pumped-about-life Andrew W.K. gets a lifetime pass, because flossing his teeth is a “party” to that guy. DMX’s “Party Up” gets a pass because it’s not really about partying … well, unless your idea of “partying” is robbing banks, in which case you and DMX have a lot in common, according to the video. Ween’s “Your Party” is OK because David Sanborn plays on it. Black Flag’s “TV Party” gets by because it’s a piss-take. Notorious B.I.G.’s “Party and Bullsh–” is party-approved because it has curse words in it. Party songs are not an exact science, after all.) While untold thousands of Miley fans might disagree with me, basically you just know a good party song as soon as you hear it — you don’t have to be told you’re listening to one. The writers of the great ones already know this, and it’s probably a good thing that 16-year-old Miley doesn’t yet. She’s got lots of time to work on her party presentation. Questions? Concerns? In addition to ‘one of her favorite movies,’ the video also pays tribute to the singer’s parents, director Chris Applebaum says. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus in her video for “Party in the U.S.A.” Photo: Disney Miley Cyrus made her intentions known when it came to the concept for her “Party in the U.S.A.” video: According to the director, her idea was all about “high-gloss, glamorous white trash.” For the clip, Cyrus wanted to pay tribute to her parents’ courting days as well as her favorite movie, “Grease.” “Miley did have an idea — one of her favorite movies is ‘Grease,’ ” director Chris Applebaum told MTV News. “Everything kind of sprang forward from that scene in ‘Grease’ where John Travolta is singing … and he gets out of the car and goes to jungle gym and sits in one of the swings and sings the song at night as projections go in the background — she came to me [with that].” In addition to the “Grease” tribute, Miley wanted to remember another time before she was born — a time when her parents were still dating. “Interesting enough, Miley’s parents Tish and Billy Ray, when they were first dating they went to a drive-in in Kentucky, I think, called the Corral Drive-In — so we named the drive-in after that as an homage to them,” Applebaum explained. “In addition, Miley’s mom Tish used to drive ’79 black Pontiac Trans Am, ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ style, and obviously that’s the car that Miley arrives in.” Applebaum raved about Cyrus, insisting she isn’t just a cookie-cutter pop star — she’s the real deal. “I really like her a lot and I’ve worked with pretty much every female pop star. … She’s fun and she’s personal and she’s smart in a way that you’d want one of your best buddies to be,” he explained. “She’s more like a guy than a girl. She doesn’t take herself too seriously. She’s a real artist, she comes from that background. She’s just a hard worker.” He notes that Cyrus is such a tomboy that if she were placed in a room with some of the biggest stars today, male and female, you’d see Cyrus hanging out with the boys. “Say there was a celebrity star-studded event and people at the party — Britney’s there, Rihanna’s there, Beyonc?’s there, but also, like, Jay-Z is there and Kid Rock is there. I could easily see a scene where you walk into a room and you see Kid Rock and Jay-Z standing next to each other laughing hysterically, and as you get closer you realize they’re standing around Miley, who is telling them stories and cracking jokes.” Related Photos Miley Cyrus: Fashionista, Fashion Designer Related Artists Miley Cyrus

New clip plays off Miley’s Nashville roots and pop sound. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus in her video for “Party In The U.S.A.” Photo: Disney Miley Cyrus debuted the music video for her single, “Party in the U.S.A.” on Wednesday night (September 23). A 90-second snippet played during “Dancing with the Stars,” and the full video is streaming on ABCmusiclounge.com for a 48-hour period. The video is reminiscent of Cyrus’ performance of the track on the Teen Choice Awards over the summer — minus the pole dancing. The clip, directed by Chris Applebaum, has Cyrus rocking short shorts, a black tank top, cowboy boots and a vest. Much of the video takes place in an abandoned drive-in movie theater and features dancers partying to Cyrus’ track on vintage cars and pickup trucks, mixing the song’s pop sound with visuals that reference her Tennessee roots, which is what she has said the song is about. ” ‘Party in the U.S.A.’ is an all-American song , and so I come out tonight and I’m literally in a trailer park. It’s a blinged-out trailer park,” she explained to MTV News before her Teen Choice performance. “I’m like, ‘This is to represent where I am from.’ I’m so proud of it. All the girls trying to be Hollywood and stuff with their big glasses, me shooing them away. I love it. It’s about my roots.” The track, produced by hitmaker Dr. Luke, is featured on Cyrus’ hit EP Time of Our Lives. Cyrus is on her Wonder World tour, and it was just recently announced that her next movie, “The Last Song,” was pushed back from January to April. The Nicholas Sparks-penned romance will hit theaters on April 2, Disney confirms. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images After catching a sneak peek at Miley Cyrus’ next flick, “The Last Song,” at shows on her Wonder World tour , fans were no doubt excited to see the film when it was supposed to open in January. But now MTV News has confirmed that the movie’s release has been delayed to later in 2010. The film — for which Cyrus has been showing a trailer, as well as singing a song off its soundtrack, “When I Look at You” — will now be released in April, a rep for the actress and a statement from Disney confirmed. “The date is now April 2,” a rep said. “We found a better release date than January for it. It will open Easter weekend/ spring break.” Cyrus filmed the Nicholas Sparks-penned movie in Tybee Island, Georgia, over the summer. She’s also been romantically linked to her co-star Liam Hemsworth . The “Hannah Montana” star has remained tight-lipped about those rumors, but she did say that the movie affected her life in some way. “I changed a lot when I was in Tybee Island. I feel like art really does imitate life,” Cyrus told MTV News . “I feel like I’m really showing a part of my growth as a person as well. So I’m really excited for people to see it, just because of what it means to me, personally.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Last Song.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Sneak peek will air during Wednesday’s show, MTV News has confirmed. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Miley Cyrus gave fans their first taste of “Party in the U.S.A.” over the summer at the Teen Choice Awards , and now the singer/actress will offer a sneak peek of the song’s video Wednesday on “Dancing With the Stars.” In a message on her Facebook page , the singer told fans, “Breaking news! A sneak peek at the world premiere of Miley’s new music video for ‘Party in the U.S.A.’ will be airing this week during the live 3-night ‘Dancing With the Stars’ premiere! … More details to come.” MTV News has confirmed the details of the sneak peek, which, according to Cyrus’ reps, will be an exclusive 90-second version of the video airing during the show Wednesday. The full-length video will be available online. Cyrus caused quite the uproar when she performed the song at the Teen Choice Awards in August. No word yet if the video will in any way take from that performance, which had Cyrus emerge from a trailer and dance on top of an ice-cream truck against what looked like a stripper pole. ” ‘Party in the U.S.A.’ is an all-American song, and so I come out tonight and I’m literally in a trailer park. Jennifer Hudson, Leona Lewis and Jordin Sparks also bring down the house during the first ‘Divas’ event in four years. By Eric Ditzian Miley Cyrus Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Four years after the TV special last aired, “VH1 Divas” returned to the airwaves with Paula Abdul assuming host duties and a slew of fierce performances by Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Leona Lewis and Jordin Sparks. Making a return to prime time more than a month after leaving “American Idol,” Abdul began her emcee gig with a dance routine set to her vintage hits. Starting with “Cold Hearted,” she segued into a performance of “Opposites Attract” with MC Skat Kat — familiar to anyone who remembers the 1989 music video — dancing and singing on a screen behind her. From there, Abdul hit “Straight Up” and “Forever Your Girl,” ending the medley as her backup dancer picked her up and lifted her toward the ceiling. “I’m Paula Abdul — and this is not ‘American Idol!’ ” she said to begin her opening remarks. The first hour of “Divas” showcased solo performances by the artists, while the second half mostly featured duets between new and older generations. Cyrus was the final solo act to appear, and in a video played before her song, she said, “My diva demands? I just want Frosted Flakes!” Upping the energy factor in the room, Cyrus rocked out “Party in the USA” as she danced in a short black skirt alongside dancers in top hats and sleeveless tux shirts. Sheryl Crow joined Cyrus onstage for “If It Makes You Happy” as the show began to wrap up. The two looked like nothing if not mother and daughter. Earlier in the first hour, Kelly Clarkson started out by busting into a slow-building version of “Already Gone” that had the “Idol” winner standing in an emerald gown and raising her hands to the roof as she nailed her high notes. Clarkson and Melissa Etheridge then closed the show with a hard-rocking take on “Bring Me Some Water.” After giving birth to a son in August, Jennifer Hudson, wearing skintight leather pants, kicked off the evening’s diva displays with “Spotlight,” a soul-soaked cut from her 2008 album of the same name. J-Hud got to sing with the night’s only male artist — Stevie Wonder, playing the piano with his signature smile on display — as the duo traded off lyrics on Stevie’s “All in Love Is Fair.” Jordin Sparks had more than a dozen backup dancers grinding behind her while the 19-year-old strutted to and fro across the stage during “S.O.S. (Let the Music Play),” from Battlefield. She had only one partner for her second performance, country singer Martina McBride, and together they took on McBride’s chart-topper “A Broken Wing.” Adele pulled off a virtuosic version of “Hometown Glory” that drew oohs and ahhs from the crowd at the Howard Gilman Opera House at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz had earlier declared September 17 “VH1 Divas Celebration Day in Brooklyn, USA.” Adele appeared again with a guitar-strumming India.Arie for a reggae-flecked rendition of “Video.” Leona Lewis sang “Happy,” then returned after the commercial break to sing “True Colors” with the song’s 1986 originator, Cyndi Lauper. The women held hands as they shared the final lines. Paula’s funniest moment of the night came when she danced her way onstage in a short blond wig, playfully imitating Ellen DeGeneres, who replaced her as a judge on “Idol.” “Why you all staring at me? Can’t a girl try out a new job?” Abdul said while lounging on a talk-show-style couch. “All kidding aside, nothing but love, Ellen. I wish you the best of luck and congratulations on the new gig! And you got to call me if you have any Simon [Cowell] problems, because I know him best.” Related Videos Miley, Kelly Clarkson And More Bring It In ‘VH1 Divas’ Related Photos Miley Cyrus, Jordin Sparks, Jennifer Hudson, More Celebrate VH1 Divas Related Artists Miley Cyrus Kelly Clarkson
