‘Hannah Montana’ star performs four songs in Rockefeller Plaza. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus performs on NBC’s “Today” at Rockefeller Center in New York City on Friday Photo: Theo Wargo/WireImage Miley Cyrus hit New York’s Rockefeller Plaza on Friday morning (August 28) for her “Today” show appearance and, despite rainy weather, her fans turned out in huge numbers to catch a glimpse of the pop star and to hear her sing a selection of her songs. Wearing a black blazer, T-shirt, necklaces, torn straight jeans and ankle boots, Cyrus sang “Party in the U.S.A.” (her pole-dance song from the Teen Choice Awards) , “The Climb,” “See You Again” and “Kicking and Screaming.” She also talked a bit about her new LP, Time of Our Lives, being released on August 31 at Wal-Mart stores, which she said features the edgier, rockier musical direction she’s been moving toward. “This album was a step towards my next album. I want to be able to step out and maybe take a break for a while and write music that inspires me,” she said. “I think there’s always a formula … I think the best way to do that is put it out of the way and do something new.” The singer also talked about her upcoming acting projects, which include the next season of “Hannah Montana” and her new film, “The Last Song,” both of which launch in January. Miley Performs On ‘Today’ “It’s gonna be crazy ’cause in January, that’s when ‘The Last Song’ comes out, so that’s going to be kind of rad and kind of dark and kind of a drama. And [then I] go back to ‘Hannah Montana.’ It’s going to be great,” she said. “It is the best of both worlds.” Cyrus also discussed what it feels like to be a role model to young girls and said that she isn’t the “perfect girl,” adding that she is bound to make mistakes just like any other 16-year-old. “I’m not here to say I’m perfect ’cause I’m far from it,” she said. “My mistakes are kind of a little bit harder because they are in front of millions and millions of people. It’s hard sometimes to smile about it, but it also makes you want to try harder the next time.” Related Photos Miley Cyrus Performs On The ‘Today’ Show Related Artists Miley Cyrus

‘I just think that Miley loves entertaining people,’ singer’s dad says. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus Photo: Miguel Villagran/ Getty Images After Miley Cyrus performed her new single “Party in the U.S.A.” at the Teen Choice Awards on August 10 — while dancing around what appeared to be a stripper pole — the singer garnered criticism about the performance, not least from Disney, the company that airs “Hannah Montana” and releases her recordings. But her dad, Billy Ray, is coming to the defense of his 16-year-old daughter and the performance that had everyone talking. “You know what? I just think that Miley loves entertaining people,” Billy Ray told Access Hollywood. “She loves singing [and] songwriting.” He added that he tells his kids to do what they think is right, no matter what other people might have to say about their decisions. “I always tell her to love what you’re doing and stay focused for the love of the art and not worry so much about opinion,” he said. Billy Ray also spoke to UsMagazine.com about the performance, noting that he isn’t there to inhibit his kids’ creative and artistic expressions. “I give my kids a lot of freedom to make the art they wanna make, and make it in their own voice,” he said. “I think it’s important.” In the days after the show, Disney issued a statement about the performance, noting that what the “Hannah Montana” star did onstage there had nothing to do with the network. “Disney Channel won’t be commenting on that performance, although parents can rest assured that all content presented on the Disney Channel is age-appropriate for our audience — kids 6-14 — and consistent with what our brand values are.” Related Artists Miley Cyrus

She also liked Jordin Sparks’ ‘more R&B version’ of one of her tracks. By Jocelyn Vena Fefe Dobson Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News Between her defunct sophomore album Sunday Love and the upcoming Joy, Fefe Dobson has kept busy writing songs — for herself and some other familiar names. “In between then [and now], I got to write for some other artists, which was cool, [like] Miley Cyrus and some others. That was fun!” she told MTV News. “That was fun, just to get to write. … All those experiences really helped me create the best record, for sure.” And although she didn’t get to actually hit the studio with Cyrus, she thinks what the singer/actress did with the song “Start all Over” for Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus was “great.” “I wrote a song, she dug it, and she sang it,” Dobson explained. “But I didn’t want it for my record. It just wasn’t right for me, and I just felt like it was better for someone else, and she does a great job on it. I was really impressed. She sounded great. I’m actually happier she did it than I did it.” “American Idol” alum Jordin Sparks also nabbed a Dobson song , “Don’t Let It Go to Your Head,” and Fefe couldn’t be more pleased that Jordin put her own twist on the track. “Jordin Sparks just did [that song], which was on Sunday Love, which was very cool,” she said. “She did kind of, like, a more R&B version of it, which I think is really nice, actually. It was really cool that she didn’t try and do a rock version of it, and she did what she’s more comfortable with, which I thought was awesome.” Related Artists Fefe Dobson Miley Cyrus

‘Hannah Montana’ star danced on what appeared to be a stripper pole during awards show. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus performs at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Before the Teen Choice Awards aired Monday night, there was already buzz surrounding Miley Cyrus’ performance of her latest single, “Party in the U.S.A.” But once the show aired and people got to see Cyrus as she emerged from a trailer scantily clad in short shorts, a tank top and biker boots and dance around what some suggested was a stripper pole, criticism began to emerge online that perhaps Cyrus’ act was too risque? for a 16-year-old, as well as for her tween fanbase. Even in the hours leading up to Cyrus’ appearance, the Disney Channel, which airs Cyrus’ popular TV show “Hannah Montana,” seemed to want to distance itself from the provocative stage show. According to Newsday.com, a spokesperson for the network said in a statement: “Disney Channel won’t be commenting on that performance, although parents can rest assured that all content presented on the Disney Channel is age-appropriate for our audience — kids 6-14 — and consistent with what our brand values are.” Before she took the stage at the show, Cyrus spoke to MTV News about the performance, saying she wanted the whole thing to be a spoof on growing up in Tennessee, adding that “it’s about my roots.” “[My] performance tonight is funny, but I wanted it to be about [something more],” she said. “I’m like, ‘This is to represent where I am from. I’m so proud of it.’ All the girls trying to be Hollywood and stuff with their big glasses, me shooing them away.” Related Videos Miley Cyrus Brings The ‘Party In The U.S.A.’ Stars Converge On Teen Choice Awards 2009 Related Photos RPattz, Britney And More At The Teen Choice Awards Related Artists Miley Cyrus

‘I love how successful her music is doing right now,’ Cyrus told us on the Teen Choice Awards red carpet. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Larry Carroll Miley Cyrus at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Remember when Britney Spears and Madonna kissed at the 2003 VMAs and it felt like some ceremonial passing of the pop-queen crown? Well, in some ways, that’s sort of how it was when Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus took the stage together at the Teen Choice Awards — just minus the liplock. Cyrus presented Spears with the Ultimate Choice Award at the show and before the two pop princesses hit the stage, she spoke to MTV News about how excited she was to finally be sharing the stage with her idol. “I’m doing something special with her tonight,” Cyrus told MTV News on the red carpet. Cyrus further explained that in addition to pairing up for the awards show, the girls have known each other and have been friendly for quite a while. “She’s a good friend of the family,” Cyrus, who also performed her new single, “Party in the USA,” said. “So I’m just happy to finally be able to really show everyone that she’s back and she never went anywhere.” In addition to both Miley and Britney finding success at a young age, Miley was quick to point out that the two, who are about 11 years apart in age, also share a common ground in terms of their upbringing. “I love how successful her music is doing right now and [I am] just proud of her,” she said. “You know, another Southern girl … I love that.” Related Videos Stars Converge On Teen Choice Awards 2009 Related Photos RPattz, Britney And More At The Teen Choice Awards Related Artists Miley Cyrus Britney Spears
